Poultry Management Systems, Inc is proud of its deep roots in the egg production business. Harry and Marilyn Herbruck established Herbruck Poultry Ranch in 1958. Harry and Marilyn’s children, including their eldest, Stephen, started in the business at very early age and grew up as Herbruck Poultry Ranch became a large and successful operation, reaching 5 million birds in production in 2008. In the 70’s it became increasingly important the need for good controls for the equipment Herbruck Egg Ranch utilized. Stephen started developing these poultry house controls on his own. That effort developed into something bigger and in 1980 Stephen and Harry founded Poultry Management Systems, Inc. to design, build, and market sophisticated electronic computer and counter systems for the egg production industry. Shortly thereafter, the Responsive Egg Flow (R.E.F.) system came into existence. With this development, computerized control of egg collection was realized. This innovation was the first of its kind anywhere in the world, and resulted in significant improvements in egg processing efficiency. In 1982, the Natural Online Animal Housing (N.O.A.H.) system was developed. It made possible computerized control of all aspects of ventilation, feeding, and lighting control in the poultry houses. In addition, it provided management information in the form of reports and graphs with which better decisions could be made regarding flock performance and profitablity. In 1985, the Automated Inventory and Marking (A.I.M.) system was added to the product line. This system allowed for ink jet coding on generic egg cases, significantly reducing packaging costs and providing an inventory listing for finished goods processed each day. In 1987, Doug Powell joined the company as an applications engineer to provide value added software and hardware features as the demand for PMSI products continued to grow. By 1992, development of the new Command II hardware platform was underway. It represented a significant advance in computing power in poultry house computers, and its graphical display capabilities and user-friendly interface made it an instant success. 1992 also saw the promotion of Doug Powell to Vice President/General Manager as the company continued to grow. In 1995, the first HACCP system was developed for monitor critical control points related to food safety in egg processing plants. It provides both validation and verification that all aspects of day-to-day operations are conducted properly. 2006 saw the development of the 3rd generation Command III hardware platform. With its capability to handle even more input and output devices, it was perfectly suited to handle the ever increasing sized of the modern poultry house. In addition, a full-sized touchscreen PC became the standard display unit. Poultry house computers had reached a new level of processing capability. Late in 2007, Doug Powell was promoted from Vice President/General Manager to President. In March of 2009 Big Dutchman, the world leader in poultry and pig equipment, purchases majority interest in the company. Stephen Herbruck remains as shareholder and Chairman of the Board of Directors. This association of PMSI’s deep understanding of its industry and Big Dutchman’s strengths as a global leader positions this company for further grow and even stronger market presence.
